🏡 Realtor's Code of Ethics

📌 What Is It?

The Realtor's Code of Ethics is a set of professional standards and ethical principles that members of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) in the United States must follow. First adopted in 1913, the Code is designed to ensure that Realtors conduct their business with honesty, integrity, and fairness, and to protect the interests of clients, customers, and the public.

🔑 Three Core Sections

1️⃣ Duties to Clients & Customers

Realtors must:

  • Promote and protect the interests of their clients while treating all parties honestly.

  • Avoid exaggeration, misrepresentation, or concealment of pertinent facts.

  • Disclose any conflicts of interest or personal interest in a property.

  • Keep client information confidential.

  • Cooperate with other brokers when it serves the client’s best interests.

2️⃣ Duties to the Public

  • Realtors must:

  • Be honest and truthful in advertising and representations.

  • Not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

  • Provide competent service and avoid practices that could harm the public.

  • Adhere to licensing laws and standards of practice.

3️⃣ Duties to Other RealtorsRealtors must:

  • Treat other real estate professionals with respect and refrain from making false or misleading statements about them.

  • Respect exclusive relationships that other Realtors have with their clients.

  • Handle disputes through professional arbitration or mediation processes.

⚖️ Enforcement

  • Enforced by local Realtor associations through peer review.

  • Penalties may include fines, mandatory education, or loss of membership.

✅ Why It Matters

  • Builds trust and credibility with clients.

  • Ensures a high standard of professional conduct.

  • Distinguishes Realtors from non-member licensees.
